Why Are Women More Affected by Migraines?

migraines in womenHave you ever wondered why migraines in women tend to happen more frequently compared to men? Migraines are extraordinarily prevalent, affecting over 38 million Americans.  Of those 38 million, 28 million are women, making women three times as likely to suffer from migraines than men.  While there is still much to be understood about migraines, there are a few things unique to women that might help explain this discrepancy:

  • Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle
  • Birth control pills or other hormonal contraception methods
  • Changes in the body during menopause
  • Pregnancy and nursing

During a migraine episode, there are not many things a person would avoid to find some relief.  More often than not, the solution lies in healing individual migraine symptoms with medications, such as pain relievers and anti-nausea pills.  Whether it concerns over long-term medication use, side effects, or otherwise, many people are looking for a different solution.

Finding Relief for Migraines in Women

Migraines in women are influenced by many factors, such as hormones, blood flow, drainage of cerebrospinal fluid, and nervous system function. All of these factors are related to the spine, particularly the positioning of the upper two vertebrae in the neck. The C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) vertebrae provide a ring of protection around the brainstem.  The brainstem, a critical part of your central nervous system, is responsible for relaying signals between other parts of the brain and body.  A disturbance in these signals can lead to abnormal changes in any of the factors listed above that contribute to the formation of migraines.

Upper cervical chiropractic is a way that many women (as well as children and men) are finding lasting relief from their migraines.  Upper cervical chiropractic addresses specific atlas and axis misalignments that can be causing abnormal nervous system function.  If your migraines fluctuate with changes in your menstrual cycle, or due to other hormonal factors, then an upper cervical misalignment may be an underlying factor.  If that is the case, we are able to assess for and correct this misalignment, which can restore your body's balance back toward normal.  This may lead to natural, lasting relief of migraines.
