Migraines: From Peppermint to Adjustment

Migraine, Headache, Natural Relief, Upper CervicalMigraines are a condition that is characterized by pulsing and throbbing in the head. It is estimated that 36 million Americans suffer from migraines. As many as 18 million Americans have chronic migraines, which would be 5 or more migraines monthly. Migraines may last for only a few hours or several days, and many people accept this as part of daily living.

Essential oils are all the rage these days and touted as relief for many everyday maladies. There may be some truth to peppermint oil helping with migraine headaches according to recent clinical studies. By applying peppermint oil to the forehead, certain subjects experienced migraine relief. While it is not known exactly how the peppermint oil has been shown effective, it is believed that the menthol in the oil relaxes muscles or potentially calms the nervous system.1 One study has shown that peppermint for migraine headaches is as effective as 1,000 milligrams of acetaminophen, the equivalent of two extra strength Tylenol. This is good news for those looking for natural relief from their migraines, but it is not a complete solution to the problem.
