Meniere's Disease Facts

Meniere's disease is a vestibular disorder that brings about a plethora of symptoms that get in the way of one's happy and healthy life. It can permanently damage the inner ear if left undiagnosed and unresolved.

The cause of Meniere's disease remains relatively unknown. But, some healthcare professionals and researchers believe it might stem from a buildup of fluid in one or both of the three semicircular canals in the inner ear.

Notably, most patients diagnosed with Meniere's experience vertigo (a spinning sensation) with tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears) and hearing loss (typically ringing). They also have episodes that last from 20 minutes to several hours. Some people also report nausea and vomiting.

In some cases, there are no warning signs before an attack occurs. However, most people will experience subtle warning signs before an attack.

Meniere's, Vertigo and How They Affect People

Meniere's is a condition that often causes recurring vertigo attacks. During an episode, you might feel like you or your surroundings. Additionally, it might seem like like you're spinning, swaying, or tilting as if on a boat on heavy seas.

Vertigo and Meniere's disease affects patients differently depending on how severe the symptoms turn out at any given time.

For example, a mild episode may only cause intermittent bouts of dizziness that tend to resolve quickly after taking medications. On the one hand, if your symptoms or attacks are more severe, you will likely experience prolonged spinning sensations and loss of hearing.

Stages of Meniere's disease

Meniere's disease can be divided and recognized in three stages: before, during, and after an attack. In this section, we will draw the line between the three to understand better the progression of your Meniere's disease and vertigo attack.

Before an Attack

Before an attack, you may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Pressure around your ears or in the back of your head
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Hearing loss

If you experience these symptoms, they likely indicate that you are about to experience an attack. This specific stage doesn't usually warrant medical attention. However, you might find it helpful to take note of its occurrence and provide some details about it when you speak with your physician or a Stow Vertigo chiropractor.

During an Attack

During an attack, you may experience:

  • Blurry vision
  • More violent vertigo
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Ear congestion
  • Trembling and cold sweats

You can do things to make yourself more comfortable in the middle of your episode.

For starters, you may want to lie down and sleep if your symptoms become severe or debilitating. We also suggest skipping any physical activity that might increase the risks of accidents or injuries, such as driving or climbing stairs. Additionally, it would help to avoid loud noises during an attack because they may exacerbate the tinnitus and hearing loss associated with Meniere's disease.

If your symptoms are milder than usual but still bothersome, try using over-the-counter medications. Make sure to follow the suggested dosage to avoid unwanted effects.

After an Attack

Soon after an episode, you will likely feel drained, exhausted, but relieved. In a way, you can return to your life before the attack. However, it would be best if you still looked out for other symptoms such as:

  • Concentration problem
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety
  • Unsteadiness
  • Stiff neck
  • Change in appetite
  • Forgetfulness
  • Visual problems

Again, we strongly suggest consulting your physician about these additional symptoms after an attack. This way, you can determine if they stem from Meniere's or other underlying problems.
