Fibromyalgia - Don’t Snooze when It Comes to Treatment

Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Always TiredThere is a health condition that affects many people, and the symptoms may be written off as part of daily living. Things such as fatigue, chronic pain, poor sleep quality, irritability, and cloudy thinking may actually be part of a more serious health condition. If you have one or more of these symptoms, then you may be suffering from Fibromyalgia (FM).

What is Fibromyalgia?

FM is a syndrome that affects approximately 3-6% of the population according to National Fibromyalgia Association. Furthermore, if you are a woman you are 75-90% more likely to get Fibromyalgia. The exact cause is not known. However, the central nervous system is always involved by the spinal cord and brain. Pain relief options vary from exercise and sleep therapy to heavy duty prescription medications. Many patients with the condition are looking for natural relief options.

Findings From Fibromyalgia Studies

Recently one study is looking at a new way to cope with one area of FM. One of the major factors in fibromyalgia is the disturbance of sleep patterns. Lack of proper sleep can cause a myriad of problems even for the healthiest of people. By experimenting with new drugs that change an area of the brain known as the thalamus, some patients are getting back into rhythm. This drug affects both the brain and nervous system, but it is not a cure for fibromyalgia.

As a healthcare provider who specializes in helping patients, I choose a different route. I am an upper cervical chiropractor here in Stow, and often fibromyalgia patients come to me as their last hope. The spine plays a crucial role in fibromyalgia, specifically the first bone in the neck known as the atlas bone. If there is a misalignment in this bone even to a small degree, it can have huge effects on the brain and spinal cord, both of which play a major role in chronic fatigue.

Clinical studies performed on FM patients under upper cervical chiropractic have shown not only improvement but in some cases complete resolution!
