Hello Spring! And allergies, sinus problems, headaches...
It's finally here! Spring brings sunshine and longer days, warmer weather, and color starting to peek through.
As much as we are grateful for the change of scenery, some of us dread this season because it also means allergies, sinus pressure, headaches, and respiratory problems.
According to an article by Tracy Miller of the New York Daily news (published March 20, 2014), "Allergists are predicting a sneezy spring in the Northeast because of the long, cold winter and higher-than-average snowfall.
"We're going to get a bumper crop of pollen starting, I would bet, next week," said Dr. Paul Ehrlich, an allergy/asthma/immunology expert at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. "Because the weather has been so cold, we sort of picture trees sitting with their hands on their hips saying 'alright, we'll wait, and then we'll pour on the pollen.'"
"The cold weather actually makes it better for trees to pollinate," agreed Dr. Timothy Mainardi of Hudson Allergy Tribeca. "We had a tremendous amount of snow this year, and all that moisture is currently being drunk up by the trees."
Some people will experience a slight delay in onset of their spring allergies because the cold weather has kept trees like birch, oak and maple from releasing their pollen, Ehrlich said."
So what do we do?
Here are some helpful tips to keep allergies, sinus headaches and respiratory problems in check this spring:
1. Don't drag the pollen inside. Take your shoes off at the door as much as possible so less pollen makes its way in your house.
2. Close your windows and dust overhead fans. As tempting as it is to fling open the windows, it's better to keep them shut so as to not allow allergens to enter through the window. If you use a ceiling fan, be sure to give it a good spring cleaning so you don't end up circulating more dust through the room.
3. Put some elbow grease into your spring cleaning. Wash down your walls, get rid of clutter, clean all sheets and comforters, dust the blinds and baseboards, everywhere that you can reach and clean thoroughly. This will help to reduce the dust and potential allergens in your home. If you are unable to do this, hire a professional company to help.
4. Keep your immune system as strong and healthy as possible by eating fresh, clean, nutrient rich foods. (Ask Dr. Besso about the It Works! Greens supplement to help keep your immune system strong, or click here for more information.)
5. Be aware of the pollen count in your area before you plan your outdoor activities. Look it up online by zip code for the day's pollen count at pollen.com.
6. Try sipping on a warm beverage to help ease congestion and keep you hydrated.
7. Know your sinus pressure triggers and do your best to avoid them. This sounds obvious, but sometimes we need a reminder!
8. Replace your air filters in your air conditioner in the house and car to help keep allergens at bay.
9. GET ADJUSTED! By keeping your nervous system functioning properly with regular chiropractic visits, we help the body to better defend against outside forces trying to break in and break down various systems. Call Besso Clinic today for a Spring adjustment! 330.689.1234
Dr. Besso has helped many patients who suffer with allergies, sinus pressure and infections, pressure headaches, and various conditions related to springtime issues. Jane F. had the following to say about her experience with NUCCA relief at Besso Clinic:
"I have been plagued with chronic bronchitis, severe sinus infections, and adult asthma for six years! These issues caused fatigue, sleep troubles, decreased memory and ultimately depression. I went to four experts with no help. I was taking steroids, inhalers, and breathing relief care during the day and sometimes during the night. I was also on antibiotic regimens every other month.
I had asked God to please find me an answer! That’s when my cousin called and told me about Upper Cervical Care. I told her I was out of options so I’d go.
In November I walked into The Besso Clinic of Chiropractic and this was my answer from God! It is such a gentle procedure with powerful results! I am now free of: Steroids, antibiotics, albuterol, and inhalers. I can even walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes daily, whereas before I couldn’t even walk up my stairs without stopping and catching my breath!
Since my breathing is better, fatigue, and sleeplessness are almost a thing of the past!!!
Thank you God! Thank you Dr.Besso & Staff."
If you know someone who suffers with similar issues like Jane's, please call our office at 330.689.1234 and we will be happy to schedule a time for them to meet with Dr. Besso.

At Besso Clinic, we know the joy, laughter, and tremendous blessings that having a child brings. We also know that it requires the highest level of responsibility to raise a capable, competent, compassionate little person and to set them up for their greatest success in life.
As your healthcare provider, we want to share with you how Chiropractic care can have a great impact on your children’s future health and well-being.
"But it's just a little fall... Should I be concerned?" We hear this all the time from parents in our office. The fact is, the same falls and spills you had as a kid that are now contributing to your discomfort in adulthood are the same ones that can potentially haunt your child as they get older.
From birth to adult, the trauma our bodies go through can contribute to:
-vision problems -ear infections
-asthma/respiratory problems -repeated infections
-sinus infections -allergies
-poor concentration -irritability
-poor posture -mobility issues
Does your child suffer from any of these conditions? If so, now is the time to bring them in.
SUCCESS STORY: Please read the following Success Story written by one of our patients who consulted with Dr. Besso about her son, Jackson.
“Jackson began NUCCA relief at Besso Clinic at age 2. He was suffering from labored breathing at night and episodes of sleep apnea. At birth he was diagnosed with torticollis (slight neck tilt) so we first sought the advice of a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. By 1 year old his condition was said to be corrected, though he continued to snore loudly and have very broken sleep patterns each night. My husband has asthma, so that was our next pursuit. We tried an inhaler for 2 months with no improvement. Next we tested for allergies-just cats of which we did not have one. We then ended up at an ENT who recommended a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, not the choice we wanted to make for our 2 year old. Fortunately, we were informed of The Besso Clinic and decided to come in for a consultation. It was made obvious to us after the first appointment that Jackson suffered from a misalignment- perhaps residual of the torticollis. After the first month we noticed significant improvement in Jackson’s breathing, energy, and overall disposition-he was definitely feeling better!
All the members of The Besso Clinic are extremely professional, and personable. Our experience has been superb!
The best part of Upper Cervical care is that it is HIGHLY effective in relieving symptoms and so simple that a 2 year old will cooperate for the office visits. It’s the best and only solution to our concerns. My husband and I are very much advocates of the care given at The Besso Clinic and are hopeful chiropractic care will be the choice of many parents over medication or surgery for their children.” –Emily C.
THE BOTTOM LINE: What if your child is relatively healthy and does not suffer from a chronic condition? Do they still need Chiropractic care?

Flu season is upon us, and we are inundated with reminders, advice, and advertisements advising us to “Remember your Flu Shot”. In fact, I have been reading about healthcare workers who must submit to mandatory flu shots or lose their jobs (link). Protection from influenza is an important topic. As adults responsible for the care of ourselves and our families, we want protection from the hazards of influenza. But, the question remains: What is the best way to do this?
A scientific study published in The Lancet reveals that influenza vaccines only prevent influenza in 1.5 out of every 100 adults who are injected with the flu vaccine (study link). And the risks are great. Serious reactions to the flu vaccine include, but are not limited to:
· Life-threatening allergies to various ingredients
· Guillain-Barre Syndrome (a severe paralytic disease that is fatal in about 1 in 20 cases)
· Encephalitis (brain inflammation)
· Neurological disorders
· Thrombocytopenia (a serious blood disorder)
So, what is the alternative? A healthy immune system is strong and can often prevent influenza from being overcome by influenza. In fact, Vitamin D3 has proven far better than vaccines at preventing influenza infections. (study link)
Thankfully, our patients are Besso Clinic of Chiropractic are on the right track. Our gentle chiropractic technique aims to bring the spine into proper alignment, especially in the area of the upper cervical vertebrae. When this proper alignment is achieved, the nerves are able to properly communicate with each other. And since the nervous system controls all functions of the body- including the immune system- Chiropractic care can improve immune system function.
Of course, getting plenty of Vitamin D, eating right including avoiding sugar, regular exercise, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding stress are also important. Try to incorporate these into your life during this season, and make time to visit Besso Clinic- and stay healthy through this flu season.
Often a patient hears about how Besso Clinic was able to help a friend or family member find relief from chronic pain, and decides to give our clinic a try for their own pain. They enter the office, hopeful to find some relief, and often a bit unsure if our NUCCA upper cervical technique will work for them. It is exciting to share in their journey as they find relief from chronic pain.
Jennifer H. was excited to share her story:
For at least 10 years I have suffered from on and off Scoliosis pain. I had x-rays to determine the severity of the Scoliosis, but I have never had any relief for it. In addition to the Scoliosis, I had decreased range of motion in my neck, back pain, and tight muscles in my mid to upper back. My shoulders and my hips were also unlevel.I was told about the Besso Clinic from a friend and about the great results they were having, so I decided to try it out for myself. Since I have started my NUCCA relief, 90% of my symptoms listed above are gone!! Yes gone! I am also sleeping better and feel more relaxed, which makes me happy. The staff is outstanding, friendly, courteous, and helpful. They are very welcoming and make me feel at home. I really like their professionalism and the Thank You note I got for committing to my relief plan.Coming frequently in the beginning wasn’t something I liked, but I knew it was necessary and I can tell you it helped me! I would recommend anyone with neck or back pain to come here. The Besso Clinic of Chiropractic offers exceptionalcare.-Jennifer H. Tallmadge, Ohio
A variety of probiotic bacteria and prebiotics can positively affect health by improving the survival and growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut or gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Specially formulated symbiotic gi-products help support a natural balance of good bacteria to maintain healthy digestion*, which helps to:
With over 70% of your body's immune cells located in the digestive tract, a healthy gut can help maintain a healthy immune system. Unfortunately, a number of factors can result in an imbalance of beneficial bacteria such as stress, aging and consumption of an unhealthy diet that is low in fiber and high in fat. Daily supplementation with a GI supplement can help normalize the delicate balance of intestinal bacteria required to keep your gut healthy, which in turn can help keep your whole body healthy
The better your digestion, the more nutrition you receive from the foods you eat.
The digestive products we recommend are called GI-Zyme and GI-Pro
When taken daily as part of your personal health program, GI-Zyme capsules can:
What are amylase and lactase, and why are they important?
Amylase is an enzyme that breaks down starch. Lactase is an enzyme that breaks down lactose. These vegetable-based enzymes in GI-Zyme® capsules support normal, healthy digestion and reduce toxicity associated with gluten proteins.
Can I take GI-Pro® and GI-Zyme® capsules at the same time?
Yes, both GI-Pro® and GI-Zyme® capsules can be taken at the same time.
What is the difference between the GI-Pro® and GI-Zyme® formulas?
Our GI-Pro® capsules are designed to help regulate the balance of microflora in your intestines through probiotics. Our GI-Zyme® capsules are designed to help support digestion of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.*
What are enzymes, and why are they important?
Enzymes are proteins that set off chemical reactions in the body. Some enzymes help to ensure that food is broken down and passed rapidly through the digestive tract.

So many times, patients share with us that they have spent many years and thousands of dollars pursuing a solution to their health care problems that they never find. It is always exciting to hear a story about someone who we were able to help BEFORE they had surgery.
In July 2011 I started to feel like my body was asleep. After 2 or 3 weeks I went to my GP and he sent me for an MRI. The MRI came back showing I had a pinched nerve in my lower back, so he sent me to an Orthopedic Doctor. He ordered a nerve test and it came back okay. He suggested we do a series of shots in my spine once a week, which did not work. All of this took me up to about the middle of November when the Doctor said I needed lower spinal surgery, which he could do the first the first week in December.
By this time it had turned into excessive pain, I was at the point that I had to use a walker to do everything. I talked to my daughter who lives in Brownsville, Texas and she told her friend who in turn called her (NUCCA Chiropractor) in Nebraska who recommended Dr. Besso in Stow, Ohio. To my surprise he was less than 2 miles away. I called for an appointment and my first was December 7th, 2011.
Since I started the NUCCA treatments, my progress has been OUTSTANDING. I am no longer in pain and have been getting back to my normal activities which I was sure I would never be able to do again. Coming here has also made it easier living in my home as well because I live in split level with stairs to go up and down no matter where you are. That was hard for me before coming here. It’s just so wonderful to walk without pain.

It is so humbling to help special people like Donna. She is in her 70's and is no longer slowed down by pain and she was able to avoid surgery! She is still coming in to get checked to "keep her on the move."

The Besso Clinic is excited about the addition of their newest staff member, Sarah Doubet. Sarah joined our staff on March 26th. She will be filling a few positions: office manager, x-ray technician, and will be wearing many other hats as the situations present themselves! This will allow the doctors to do what they love best, spend more time with patients, helping them to live healthier and fuller lives!
Sarah is a native of Green, OH, and recently moved back to Green from Hebron, KY (a suburb of Cincinnati, OH) to be closer to her extended family. She and her husband, Smith Doubet have been married for 13 years and have three young children: Lucie (8), Candace (5), and little Smithy (4).
We believe Sarah’s love of people, detailed personality, and experience will compliment our office, and our vision of caring for the people of Stow, OH and beyond. She attended Geneva College and graduated with a degree in Recreational Therapy. She went on to be an office manager to multiple regional offices for a credit card company, and then the director of a large kids camp outside of Pittsburgh, PA. She cares deeply for people, and is excited to be a part of a staff and practice that feels the same.
If you see her around the office, please take the time to get to know her. Sarah is quickly becoming part of our team, and she would love to hear about your experiences with Besso Clinic!

Over 6 million car accidents occur in the U.S. each year. And according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over 3 million of these accidents result in injuries that often lead to chronic pain and suffering.
The most common injury sustained during a Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) is a Whiplash injury. A Whipash injury is when your head accelerates and decelerates abrubltly jerking the head when your car is struck form the side , front, or back.
The signs of a Whiplash injury are often delayed. Frankly when I ask patients if they had had any accidents they often think their 'Little' fender bender didn't cause an injury.. but some new research should make you think twice about that.
Some of the signs of a whiplash injury, according to Wed MD, include:
Neck pain, stiffness, headaches, midback pain, shoulder or shoulder blade pain, dizziness, arm numbness, ringing in the ears, difficulty concentrating, irritability, sleep disturbances, fatigue... and the list goes on and on.
Even if you only had a stiff neck after an MVA you might be in for bigger problems down the road if an upper cervical (neck) misalignment goes undetected, according to one study. An upper neck misalignment, if uncorrected can set of an inflammatory proces in the body and lead to chronic conditions like fibromyalgia. Sometimes the symptoms are slow to come on and you don't even realize what the root cause is. (especially if you are like my average patient who thinks the lil accident didn't cause a problem).
One study shows that a 6.7 mile per hour collision can cause over 10G's of force to go into the neck... more than enough to cause a problem.
I will be sharing much more on this topic in future posts. If you have been in an accident I encourage you to get checked!
