This week, on Wednesday May 16th at 10:40, our patient Carrie N. will be joining Dr. Besso on Good Company (WKYC Channel 3) to share her story of relief from neck pain and migraine headaches. She's excited to share the difference upper cervical chiropractic has made in her life. Tune in to Channel 3 at 10:00 am (so you don't miss it)!

I was first diagnosed with migraines in 2000. Prior to that, I had neck pain, back
pain (sciatica), and shoulder injuries/pain. During the summer of 2010, I began
relief care with a traditional chiropractor. While I had some relief of sciatica,
my neck pain and frequency of my migraines continued to increase. When the
frequency increased to between 4 to 6 every month, my PCP referred me to a
neurologist. I was sent for an MRI of the brain to check for tumors, had blood
work performed to check everything, and I was sent to an ortho surgeon for the
numbness in my hands/arms. I then had a nerve conduction study done.

All tests came back normal. I didn’t receive any answers as to why the increase
in migraines, neck pain and numbness in my hands and arms were causing me to
have a ‘slushy’ head feeling.

My supervisor at work was aware of how much pain I was working through every
day between the migraines and neck pain. So, for Christmas she gave me a gift
certificate for an evaluation at the Besso Clinic of Chiropractic. I knew it was going
to be a big commitment (since I live an hour away) and a financial commitment too,
but it has been worth it!

I work in the medical field, so when I got to see my x-rays, I couldn’t believe how
bad they were. I knew that I had degeneration in my neck and two bone spurs, but
the counter rotation is what blew me away. NOW I had the answers I had been
looking for!! Now I knew what was causing the numbness, deep neck pain, ‘slushy’
head feeling, and migraines. It only took three to four NUCCA sessions to get rid of
all the numbness from my left hand/arm, and just a few more sessions for the right
hand/arm.

I hardly ever take pain medications now and I have only had two migraines in
almost four months, both of which were bad weather related. My neurologist was
so happy at my last follow up that I was taken off of my daily preventative migraine
medication. The staff is top notch and I would tell anyone that had neck or back
pain to get here fast for relief!

Studies On Neck Pain

In July 2010 there was a groundbreaking study published in Brain Injury.  If you have been in a car accident in the past and have ANY head or neck pain please do continue to read on...

This is how the study was designed, now pay attention :)... The study included 1200 patients with head or neck pain.  600 had a history of a whiplash injury and 600 did not.  Then they divided each group in half again and they performed a standard recumbent Magnetic resonance imaging or MRI (laying down in the tube) on 300 patients and a new type of MRI called an Upright MRI on the remaining in 300 patients in each group.

So, what were the results and why was this study so eye opening?

First, to build some context, let me explain a little bit about how the junction between the head and neck is designed.  Our heads weigh about ten pounds, roughly the same weight of a bowling ball.  The load of the head is supported by a ring shaped 2 ounce bone called the atlas. The atlas is the topmost bone of our necks.

Most of the million messages per minute that go from the brain to the rest of the body, and back up, flow right through the ring of the atlas vertebra.  Also, it is important to note that the base of the brain is called the cerebellum. The brain stem should be up inside the skull, where it is safe from any harm.

Ideally and by design, it should not protrude down and out of the cranium at all. However, there are events that cause the brain to protrude. Examples include car accidents and high-impact contact sports. If the brain protrudes out it is called Cerebellar Ectopia. This is another cause for worry since it might lead to respiratory arrest.

Ok, back to the results of the study.  When the upright MRI was performed on the whiplash group, the researchers found Cerebellar Ectopia 24% of the time!  So, if you have been in a car accident there may be a 1 in 4 chance that your head or neck pain is due to YOUR BRAIN PROTRUDING OUT of the skull. This is mind-blowing.

Now, this is where it gets really interesting. And, this is one of the reasons why I am blogging about this. There is hope for a solution when it comes to this neck pain. Upper cervical specific chiropractors can help!  I have the necessary experience to help you with this condition.

Follow up studies have been performed and they have shown that when upper cervical chiropractors like me realign the Atlas (C-1) vertebra, the tension on the brainstem and cerebellum is reduced. This allows the cerebellum to move back up to where it belongs which is inside the skull/cranium and not outside where it was protruding.

This explains why our patients' see improvements in: neck pain, headaches, energy levels, sleep patterns, mental clarity, numbness and the list goes on and on, upon rebalancing the head and neck in a gentle specific manner with the NUCCA technique.

I hope all of this made sense and convicts you to have your spinal alignment checked, especially if you have had any head or neck trauma.

Blessings,

Dr. Geoff Besso

Cerebellar tonsillar eptopia is substantially more prevalent in whiplash- injured patients than in neck pain patients with no recent history of trauma.

Have you been told your only option for sciatica is back surgery?  You may have other options,  read this patient success story...

"My success story related to sciatica started in July 2011 when I felt like my body was asleep.  After 2 or 3 weeks I went to my GP and he sent me for an MRI.  The MRI came back showing I had a scaitica or pinched nerve in my lower back, so he sent me to an Orthopedic Doctor.  He ordered a nerve test and it came back okay. He suggested we do a series of shots in my spine once a week, which did not work.  All of this took me up to about the middle of November when the Doctor said I needed lower spinal surgery, which he could do the first the first week in December.

By this time it had turned into excessive pain, I was at the point that I had to use a walker to do everything.  I talked to my daughter who lives in Brownsville, Texas and she told her friend who in turn called her doctor in Nebraska who recommended Dr. Besso in Stow, Ohio. To my surprise he was less than 2 miles away.  I called for an appointment and my first was December 7th, 2011.

Since I started the NUCCA relief care for my sciatica, my progress has been OUTSTANDING.  I am no longer in pain and have been getting back to my normal activities which I was sure I would never be able to do again. Coming here has also made it easier living in my home as well because I live in split level with stairs to go up and down no matter where you are.  That was hard for me before coming here.  It’s just so wonderful to walk without pain."

Restored Vision Success Story

"In October 2011, I was admitted to Children’s Hospital because I had suddenly lost my vision in my left eye.  They ran tests, sent me to ophthalmology, neurology and neurophthalmology, and had me undergo MRIs.  Their final word was that my brain was normal, my eye was normal, and that my eye just wasn’t getting a message from my brain about what it was seeing.  They told me to come back in a few months if my vision did not come back!!  I felt like they weren’t believing what was happening to me and just sending me home.

Just after that, my grandma was in seeing Dr. Besso and was telling him about what had happened.  He asked her to please bring me in as he was just as frustrated as I was about not getting any real answers at the hospital.  When we came in to Besso Clinic of Chiropractic, we were met with friendly faces and very welcomed.  Dr. Besso spent a lot of time asking me about what was happening with my vision and also about all of my past medical issues and even things from when I was much younger.

poweI finally felt like a doctor was listening to me.   After reviewing the x-rays with us, he told us that a fall I had had late in the summer could have been one of the big issues that may have caused me to gradually lose my vision.  There was some compression in my neck and he was hopeful that if he worked on that, my vision might gradually come back.

After three weeks of relief care, I noticed my eye began to water.  A few days later I could see some hazy light and shortly after that I had some burning pain in my eye for about a day.  The next morning, I could really tell that my vision was coming back.  After a total of close to four weeks, my vision had completely returned!!!!  I have continued my therapy with Dr. Besso to make sure that my neck stays strong and in place.  I have even had some great relief of my arthritis that had been diagnosed just shortly before I had lost my vision!!!

My family all believes that this has been nothing short of a miracle!  We are so grateful to Dr. Besso and his knowledge and that this type of therapy has been so helpful for me.  The timing in having my grandma visiting him and talking about my situation was definitely not a coincidence and I am SO glad we came in to see him! So, how can this happen?  Why is a patient recovery like this so shocking to the traditional medical establishment, and maybe even to you the reader?

In a future post I'm going to post a link to some recently published literature on Cerebral Spinal Fluid flow improvement with a Specific Upper Cervical Chiropractic Correction (especially for the analytical readers), and hopefully it will help connect the dots for you.

I believe our body is designed to heal itself.  If a health problem arises your body can heal when given the right support and by ensuring the nerve system is functioning optimally.

The brain controls and coordinates the functions of the rest of the body and if there is a misalignment where the brain meets the body ( at the Atlas, C-1 level) then the nerve system will not function optimally, blood flow and cerebral spinal fluid flow to and from the brain will be compromised, and malfunction throughout the body will ensue.

It's simple, and I realize the idea is too simple for some to fathom.  But it works.

Thank God!
