effects of migraineEven suffering from one migraine headache can be incapacitating, but imagine having them 15 days out of the month! If a person has migraines for at least 15 days during a month’s time, the condition is considered chronic in nature. Other headaches, besides migraines, that can become chronic are:

Approximately 3-5% of people suffer from these chronic headache conditions around the globe. Recent research is revealing just how serious headaches can be. Below is one of the common effects of migraine

Effects of Migraine: Tissue Loss

Research has revealed that there are changes that go on in the brains of people who suffer from migraines and other chronic headaches. What is being seen is a drastic change in brain tissue compared to those that do not experience chronic headaches.

Migraines are actually a neurological issue that have the main symptom of severe head pain. What are some other symptoms?

Studies indicate that there is a definite loss of tissue in the brain in migraine patients. Dr. Rocca examined 16 migraine patients and discovered that each one had these changes in brain tissue. This was noted likely to be caused by repeated attacks of pain. Since this is such a serious situation, one may wonder if there is any safe, natural way to alleviate migraines and other headaches?

Upper Cervical Chiropractors and Effects of Migraine

Often, the pain of migraines can be linked to a misalignment in the upper neck vertebrae. At Upper Cervical Health Center Boise, we examine patients to see if this has occurred. We only adjust patients when they have misalignments. Once the misalignment is corrected, migraine patients often see a reduction or resolution of migraine headaches and other chronic headache types.

Their exact cause is unknown, but for those who suffer, what is known is that the pain of migraines is intense and often accompanied by:

Migraine episodes usually last anywhere from 2 to 72 hours. Most of the time, those who have these attacks want to shut themselves away in a quiet, dark room until the pain subsides. This is not a normal part of life. Rather, it is the body’s way of telling one that something is wrong. In severe cases, medical attention should be sought immediately. Here are some symptoms that should not be ignored. Rather, they warrant a visit to the emergency room:

Where to Turn for Migraine Episodes Help

A general practitioner will often prescribe certain medications to help those with non-life-threatening migraines. However, these often come with unwanted side effects and, in the long run, may actually make migraines worse.

One area that has seen much success in alleviating migraines is that of upper cervical chiropractic care. This is a specific form of chiropractic that does not require popping or twisting of the spine. The focus is on using a gentle method to help realign the bones of the upper neck. This is often the root cause of migraine episodes. It is very mild procedure that has shown itself to help migraine sufferers.

If you are experiencing frequent headaches, especially if you have experienced any kind of head or neck trauma in the past, upper cervical chiropractic may be able to provide you with some natural benefits.

Post-Concussion Syndrome CausesPost-concussion syndrome may follow a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) or other head injury. Symptoms of post-concussion syndrome vary but generally include headaches, dizziness, cognitive and psychological effects, and sleep issues. As a result, this condition can affect the daily life of a person and interfere with both work and personal life. By learning more about the possible Post-Concussion Syndrome causes you can plan a better approach to managing your condition.

Post-Concussion Syndrome Causes

Generally, post-concussion syndrome occurs after a head injury. What some people do not realize is that an injury or accident that can cause whiplash can also result in an MTBI. Many are under the misconception that unless a person is knocked unconscious and even has loss of memory of the injury or accident that a serious enough injury to result in post-concussion syndrome has not occurred. To the contrary, even a mild head injury may result in this condition.

The condition is usually diagnosed based on patient history. The existence of a head injury in combination with the symptoms noted above is often enough to receive a diagnosis. Of course, a diagnosis is one thing, but relief is another. Most medical doctors will just recommend plenty of rest until the condition “clears up” on its own. However, left untreated, these symptoms may continue for months or even years.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic and Post-Concussion Syndrome Causes

When a head injury occurs, upper cervical misalignments are common. Such a misalignment can put pressure on the brainstem. It can also restrict proper blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow to and from the brain. All of these factors may contribute to post-concussion syndrome. The first step in recovery should thus be to correct the misalignment.

At Besso Clinic in Stow, Ohio, we use the NUCCA technique to identify and gently correct just such a misalignment. By means of precise x-rays, the exact location of the misalignment can be identified. Then a personalized correction can be developed for each individual patient. Let's help you get to the bottom of your Post-Concussion Syndrome causes today.

Children's Dizziness, Kids Vertigo, Dizzy, Meniere'sDo you suffer from dizziness and ringing in the ears that can ruin your day, week, or even month? If so you may have a condition known as Vertigo which affects 5-10% of the American public. It is also becoming much more of a common problem in children according to a new study.

The Impact of Vertigo in Children

It is reported that at least 5% of American children from the ages of 3-17 have some sort of dizziness or balance related problem, one out of every 20 children. These facts come as a result of a study performed on 11,000 children according to annual National Health Interview Survey.

A child may described a spinning sensation that is typical of vertigo but they may also experience dizziness and other ways such as light headedness, poor balance and coordination, fainting and frequent falls. It is important to be observant as 32% children went undiagnosed. The number rose to 59.6% in children who experience any major health conditions like neurological diseases, concussions, or metabolic conditions.1

This is extremely concerning to me as someone who specializes in helping people with dizziness and vertigo relief. If this problem is not addressed as a child it develops into more serious impairment as an adult. Often people find me as a last resort after many other relief options have failed and they want to achieve natural vertigo relief.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Helps Children with Vertigo

As an upper cervical chiropractor I pay special attention to the neck, especially the first bone in the spine known as the Atlas (C1). It is quite common that people who suffer from vertigo have a misaligned Atlas bone. When the atlas is not in its proper position it affects the ears which control balance through the brain and nervous system. Through a careful and detailed process I determine the exact position of the atlas and can correct through a period of care. Studies have shown that patients with vertigo have not only reduced their symptoms but have even had complete resolution.2

Concussion, Neck Pain, Neck Injury, Concussions are a common occurrence in many sports and recreational activities that affect 1.6-3.8 million people in the United States.1 Concussions can happen quickly and often go undetected with little or no symptoms, until they manifest as larger problems years later.

Concussions pose a major challenge to health care providers due their intricate nature. Concussions are also known as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) which happens when the brain moves inside the skull, typically caused by some sort of trauma. Symptoms may be obvious such as nausea, fatigue, and headaches; however, some signs are very small and go unnoticed.

A major concern at the moment is concussions in sports, both amateur and professional. Identifying a concussion after a hard hit is challenging as the markers may not develop until days later. It is common for sports teams and players to “tough it out” to win a game. This risks losing long-term health and stability.

Youth sports have perhaps the highest risk to have long-lasting negative effects as a result of a concussion. The developing brain of any child is more vulnerable to concussions. After the first concussion, the chance of getting a second or third concussion increases by 150%. The standard in on-field concussion screening misses an estimated 40% of concussions, and 50% of high school-age athletes did not self-report concussions. A direct blow to the head does not need to occur for a concussion to take place. A whiplash injury from a blow to the body can cause a concussion. It is time to take a different look at concussion diagnosis and relief to get to the cause of the issue.

Concussion Specialist Dr. Geoff Besso is helping patients get natural relief from concussions in Stow, Ohio. Dr Besso is a specially trained Upper Cervical Chiropractor who deals with the Atlas Bone (C1 vertebra) as it relates to the brain and nervous system function. Clinical studies have shown that when the Atlas bone under the skull is misaligned, it affects the fluid that delivers oxygen and also provides protection to the brain, one of the main side effects of concussions.

When the Atlas is restored to its proper position by an Upper Cervical Chiropractic adjustment that fluid flow is restored, and brain function can return more quickly.2 Concussions and related symptoms can heal at a faster rate when the brain properly receives the appropriate nutrients and oxygen.

orange barrelsIt's that time of year: orange barrel season!

The barrels let us know there is a construction site ahead, to drive cautiously, and to look out for the broken areas in the road.  As much as we dread this time of year because it tends to slow down our commute, we know the construction is needed to smooth the roads, fill potholes, and make our driving experience easier and more fluid.

Ever feel like you need some orange barrels in your own life?  Many of our Patients have felt the same way.  They come in to our office on the verge of having surgery, another shot of medication, or another procedure done because they are so eager to get some relief.

What they often find with NUCCA is that they can avoid the surgery, more medication, and yet another procedure.  And they can get the relief they are in need of naturally.

The Dr of the future quote

Read what one of our Patients had to say about her experience with NUCCA care at Besso Clinic.

"I am so glad that I chose to get relief care at the Besso Clinic of Chiropractic. I had tried a few other things before coming, but being a hair dresser, surgery wasn’t an option. My friend told me about Dr. Besso, and I had never tried chiropractic in the past. To be honest, I was afraid that the adjustment would be painful. Dr. Besso put me right at ease, letting me know it was non-invasive and very gentle. Every adjustment I’ve had has been pain free with huge benefits.

All of my neck, shoulder, hand, and arm pain that I have had for 3-5 years is gone.  My hip pain has improved greatly, and as an added bonus my blood sugar has improved. My quality of life is definitely better all the way around, and my energy level has improved as well.

I was skeptical at first, as I am sure most are. I can tell you now, that I do definitely recommend the Besso Clinic and I will try to get the word out about NUCCA relief for pain. I so appreciate being treated with professionalism and kindness by all staff and Doctors."

Hello Spring!  And allergies, sinus problems, headaches...

Sinus, Allergies, PollenIt's finally here!  Spring brings sunshine and longer days, warmer weather, and color starting to peek through.

As much as we are grateful for the change of scenery, some of us dread this season because it also means allergies, sinus pressure, headaches, and respiratory problems.

According to an article by Tracy Miller of the New York Daily news (published March 20, 2014), "Allergists are predicting a sneezy spring in the Northeast because of the long, cold winter and higher-than-average snowfall.

"We're going to get a bumper crop of pollen starting, I would bet, next week," said Dr. Paul Ehrlich, an allergy/asthma/immunology expert at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. "Because the weather has been so cold, we sort of picture trees sitting with their hands on their hips saying 'alright, we'll wait, and then we'll pour on the pollen.'"

"The cold weather actually makes it better for trees to pollinate," agreed Dr. Timothy Mainardi of Hudson Allergy Tribeca.  "We had a tremendous amount of snow this year, and all that moisture is currently being drunk up by the trees."

Some people will experience a slight delay in onset of their spring allergies because the cold weather has kept trees like birch, oak and maple from releasing their pollen, Ehrlich said."

So what do we do?

Here are some helpful tips to keep allergies, sinus headaches and respiratory problems in check this spring:

1.  Don't drag the pollen inside.  Take your shoes off at the door as much as possible so less pollen makes its way in your house.

2.  Close your windows and dust overhead fans.  As tempting as it is to fling open the windows, it's better to keep them shut so as to not allow allergens to enter through the window.   If you use a ceiling fan, be sure to give it a good spring cleaning so you don't end up circulating more dust through the room.

3.  Put some elbow grease into your spring cleaning.  Wash down your walls, get rid of clutter, clean all sheets and comforters, dust the blinds and baseboards, everywhere that you can reach and clean thoroughly.  This will help to reduce the dust and potential allergens in your home.  If you are unable to do this, hire a professional company to help.

4.  Keep your immune system as strong and healthy as possible by eating fresh, clean, nutrient rich foods.  (Ask Dr. Besso about the It Works! Greens supplement to help keep your immune system strong, or click here for more information.)

5.  Be aware of the pollen count in your area before you plan your outdoor activities.  Look it up online by zip code for the day's pollen count at pollen.com.

6.  Try sipping on a warm beverage to help ease congestion and keep you hydrated.

sinus pressure headache7.  Know your sinus pressure triggers and do your best to avoid them.  This sounds obvious, but sometimes we need a reminder!

8.  Replace your air filters in your air conditioner in the house and car to help keep allergens at bay.

9.  GET ADJUSTED!  By keeping your nervous system functioning properly with regular chiropractic visits, we help the body to better defend against outside forces trying to break in and break down various systems.  Call Besso Clinic today for a Spring adjustment!  330.689.1234

Dr. Besso has helped many patients who suffer with allergies, sinus pressure and infections, pressure headaches, and various conditions related to springtime issues.  Jane F. had the following to say about her experience with NUCCA relief at Besso Clinic:

"I have been plagued with chronic bronchitis, severe sinus infections, and adult asthma for six years! These issues caused fatigue, sleep troubles, decreased memory and ultimately depression. I went to four experts with no help. I was taking steroids, inhalers, and breathing relief care during the day and sometimes during the night. I was also on antibiotic regimens every other month.

I had asked God to please find me an answer! That’s when my cousin called and told me about Upper Cervical Care. I told her I was out of options so I’d go.

In November I walked into The Besso Clinic of Chiropractic and this was my answer from God! It is such a gentle procedure with powerful results! I am now free of: Steroids, antibiotics, albuterol, and inhalers. I can even walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes daily, whereas before I couldn’t even walk up my stairs without stopping and catching my breath!

Since my breathing is better, fatigue, and sleeplessness are almost a thing of the past!!!

Thank you God!  Thank you Dr.Besso & Staff."

If you know someone who suffers with similar issues like Jane's, please call our office at 330.689.1234 and we will be happy to schedule a time for them to meet with Dr. Besso.

On November 5th, 2012 Dr. Geoffrey Besso was interviewed on WKYC Channel 3's "Live on Lakeside" show. They invited him to share on the benefits of his specific NUCCA chiropractic technique, specifically in the area of headaches. In the past 7 years Dr. Besso has used this gentle and specific technique to help many patients find relief from chronic headaches. Patients are always happy to find a solution to the pain they experience on a daily basis, pain that they often think they just have to "live with". Take a  minute to watch the video, and give us a call at 330.689.1234 if you would like us to sit down with you to discuss finding relief from your headaches.

Dr. Besso's November 5th 2012 interview- Live on Lakeside, WKYC Channel 3

Many patients come to Besso Clinic hopeful, and yet skeptical. They have suffered for years with pain: debilitating pain that is keeping them from being active with their kids or grandkids, from gardening or golf, or simply from getting a good night's sleep. Many people are looking desperately for a solution, but most of those solutions come with side effects, drugs, or invasive surgery. Yet they walk through our doors, daring to be hopeful. We get excited to be a part of the solution, to meet them and help them walk the road to relief- not just from pain, but to an increased level of wellness in their entire body. This is Maggie C's story. Call us at 330-689-1234 to being your story.

I came to the Besso Clinic of Chiropractic looking for relief from my monthly migraines, allergies, and sinus problems. I also would wake up with neck pain, and a headache. I have suffered with these problems for most of my life.

I tried other chiropractors as well as allergist who just gave me medication. I took the medication and still found no relief, plus I didn’t want to be on medication for the rest of my life.

It’s been a year, and I have had one migraine. I just can’t believe it! My neck pain is better, my allergies are less, and I don’t wake up with a headache. The NUCCA procedure is very gentle, and the Drs. are great when it comes to doing what’s best for each patient. The staff here is amazing; everyone is so welcoming and supportive.

The hardest part for me was the waiting for the results, being patient was difficult at first, but it was totally worth the long-term results. I am so happy the Besso Clinic helped me feel better, and made me able to do things I enjoy doing without pain or taking medication to do so.
