fatigue, always tired, FibromyalgiaThere is a health condition that affects many people, and the symptoms may be written off as part of daily living. Things such as fatigue, chronic pain, poor sleep quality, irritability, and cloudy thinking may actually be part of a more serious health condition. Estimates say that anywhere from 3-20 million people in America suffer from the condition. If you are a woman, you are 10 times more likely to get Fibromyalgia than a man.

Fibromyalgia Facts:

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that affects approximately 3-6% of the population according to the National Fibromyalgia Association. Furthermore, if you are a woman you are 75-90% more likely to have the condition. The exact cause is not known, however, the central nervous system is always involved by the spinal cord and brain. Relief options vary from exercise and sleep therapy to heavy duty prescription medications. Many patients with the condition are looking for natural relief options.

Identifying Fibromyalgia:

One of the problems with fibromyalgia is being able to identify the condition. The general symptoms are not unique and could be related to many other disease processes. A new blood test is helping to better diagnose the condition. The expensive test is now becoming more manageable thanks to the aid of insurance coverage.

Unfortunately, the test does not do anything to manage the condition; it only provides better detection. It may open up new doors for relief in the future but is helping many patients now in some ways. Often it is hard for loved ones of patients to grasp the seriousness of fibromyalgia. Having a good diagnostic measurement helps others to understand that it truly is a problem, not a made up condition.

Fibromyalgia Fixes:

As a healthcare provider who specializes in helping fibromyalgia patients, I choose a different route. I am an upper cervical chiropractor here in Stow, Ohio. Many patients often come to me as their last hope. The spine plays a crucial role in the condition, specifically the first bone in the neck known as the atlas. If there is a misalignment in this bone even to a small degree, it can have huge effects on the brain and spinal cord, both of which play a major role in fibromyalgia.

Clinical studies performed on patients under upper cervical chiropractic care have shown not only improvement but in some cases complete resolution!

vertigo, dizziness, spinningAt some time or another, we’ve all experienced what it’s like to be dizzy.  Usually, that feeling that your surroundings are whirling or spinning around you has a reason, like stepping off a ride at the fair or playing on the playground with your children.  However, dizzy spells or vertigo attacks can arise suddenly, and this can be very disconcerting.  To understand the condition of vertigo a little better, let’s break it down into its two types: peripheral and central.

Peripheral Vertigo

Peripheral vertigo is by far the most common type, caused by issues with the inner ear.  The role of the inner ear is to aid in balance, so when there’s a problem within the inner ear, it can cause vertigo symptoms.  Examples of peripheral vertigo include:

Central Vertigo

Central vertigo is a problem with the central nervous system, and can have more serious causes such as:

What Relief Options Are Available?

Regardless of the type of vertigo you present with, most medical relief approaches set their sights on symptomatic relief.  This usually comes in the form of various medications to treat the dizziness, nausea, headaches, and possible hearing issues.  While symptomatic relief is important, medications and other therapies are just stop-gap measures until the next episode inevitably occurs.

Getting to the Root Cause of Vertigo

Upper cervical chiropractic care is being sought out more and more for the lasting results vertigo sufferers are able to achieve.  Spinal misalignments in the upper portion of the neck can hinder normal communication between the brain and body.  The vertebrae, whose job it is to protect the brainstem and spinal cord, can create interference in the communication of signals that carry information about balance and body position when they shift out of normal alignment from an injury or wear and tear.

We assess each of our patients individually to determine if a specific atlas misalignment may be a contributing factor in their condition.  In a study of 60 patients with chronic vertigo undergoing upper cervical chiropractic care, all patients experienced a reduction in the frequency and/or severity of their attacks, with 48 of the 60 reporting a complete resolution of their symptoms.

vertigo, dizziness, spinningMeniere’s Disease Overview

Meniere’s disease is a chronic condition affecting the inner ear that is expected to worsen over time.  Recurring episodes with symptoms such as vertigo, hearing loss, and tinnitus are caused by an abnormally large quantity of fluid that collects in the inner ear.

Though Meniere’s disease can occur at any age, it’s most likely to develop in adults between the ages of 40 and 60.  While no exact cause has been pinpointed, many theories are out there concerning the reason behind why the disease occurs, including allergies, autoimmune reactions, genetic correlations, and viral infection.

Because no cause has been nailed down, relief options also remain limited.  Many people who suffer from Meniere’s disease, unfortunately, achieve little to no relief under the traditional relief approaches, which consist of medications to reduce vertigo and nausea, or some type of rehabilitation to the vestibular system.  On the other hand, we see great results in our practice utilizing specific upper cervical chiropractic techniques.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic for Meniere’s Disease Relief

Chiropractic research has shown a connection between a misalignment of the atlas, the topmost vertebra in the spine, and the presence of Meniere’s symptoms.  A study of 139 Meniere’s patients showed that all had suffered from an atlas misalignment from a prior injury to the head or neck, and once corrected, 136 of the 139 patients achieved an absence or dramatic reduction of symptoms, particularly vertigo.

At Besso Clinic of Chiropractic, we take the time to understand each patient’s history and we utilize the latest technology to assess whether an atlas misalignment may be at the root of what’s causing your health condition.  If so, we restore proper alignment and proper body balance so that your nervous system is able to function optimally.  If you’ve taken different approaches to relieving your Meniere’s symptoms without lasting relief, then upper cervical chiropractic is the next logical step.

Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Always Tired, FatigueHow the NUCCA Technique Can Help Alleviate Your Fibromyalgia Pain

Fibromyalgia is one of many chronic diseases that people suffer from in the world today. However, you don’t need to feel helpless or hopeless if you are experiencing the pain of fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, one of the most successful relief methods is one of the least well known.

Sadly, there are also still people out there who will tell a fibromyalgia sufferer that the problem is all in your head. Because of this, many do not seek a relief or even a diagnosis. They just take medication for the pain and try their best to go about their daily activities.

It’s also important to note that the genesis of fibromyalgia may have more to do with the neck than with the head, and that’s why upper cervical chiropractic care can help. Here is some more information on this natural and side-effect-free alternative to pain relievers.

Fibromyalgia Patients Can Get Natural Relief

While many in the medical field do not understand fibromyalgia, upper cervical chiropractors are in a unique position to help. This is because we utilize the NUCCA technique to align the top vertebrae in the spine properly. When these bones are misaligned, nerve damage can result in widespread body pain. This is because the bones are right by the brainstem and can affect the entire nervous system. Hence, misalignments such as this are the underlying cause of many chronic conditions.

Most people are used to taking medication. They just feel like the only thing they can do is treat the pain and live with it. Pain meds don’t solve the problem, however. Upper cervical chiropractic offers a real solution to those whose fibromyalgia is caused by a misalignment. Why not seek a consultation today to see if your symptoms can be reduced or even resolved by a few simple adjustments?

Thanks for reading, and we look forward to seeing you here at the Besso Clinic.

Children's Dizziness, Kids Vertigo, Dizzy, Meniere'sDo you suffer from dizziness and ringing in the ears that can ruin your day, week, or even month? If so you may have a condition known as Vertigo which affects 5-10% of the American public. It is also becoming much more of a common problem in children according to a new study.

The Impact of Vertigo in Children

It is reported that at least 5% of American children from the ages of 3-17 have some sort of dizziness or balance related problem, one out of every 20 children. These facts come as a result of a study performed on 11,000 children according to annual National Health Interview Survey.

A child may described a spinning sensation that is typical of vertigo but they may also experience dizziness and other ways such as light headedness, poor balance and coordination, fainting and frequent falls. It is important to be observant as 32% children went undiagnosed. The number rose to 59.6% in children who experience any major health conditions like neurological diseases, concussions, or metabolic conditions.1

This is extremely concerning to me as someone who specializes in helping people with dizziness and vertigo relief. If this problem is not addressed as a child it develops into more serious impairment as an adult. Often people find me as a last resort after many other relief options have failed and they want to achieve natural vertigo relief.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Helps Children with Vertigo

As an upper cervical chiropractor I pay special attention to the neck, especially the first bone in the spine known as the Atlas (C1). It is quite common that people who suffer from vertigo have a misaligned Atlas bone. When the atlas is not in its proper position it affects the ears which control balance through the brain and nervous system. Through a careful and detailed process I determine the exact position of the atlas and can correct through a period of care. Studies have shown that patients with vertigo have not only reduced their symptoms but have even had complete resolution.2

Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Always TiredFibromyalgia: The Day to Day Experience

For those living with this condition, nearly every aspect of their life is in some way affected. Because fibromyalgia is a chronic condition, it can be exhausting and frustrating for the sufferer. This inevitably will reach into how they react to those around them. Family and friends do well, therefore, to have an understanding of the condition. This can help strengthen relationships and result in the needed support.

What You Should Know About Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia involves the nervous system and heightens the body's response to stimuli. There are two conditions that are commonly associated with this phenomenon, Hyperesthesia and Allodynia.

Hyperesthesia occurs when the central nervous system greatly increases a person's sensitivity to things like pain, sound, sight and the like.

Allodynia is a similar condition. However, it does not require a stimulus to feel pain. That means that pain may be felt but with nothing actually there to cause that pain.

Sleep plays a vital role in a person's well-being. This is especially true for those who suffer from fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, what is termed restorative sleep is sometimes fleeting for those with fibromyalgia. More than just the quantity of sleep, restorative sleep involves the quality or restfulness of that sleep. This is usually a result of excessive sensitivity to the world around them.

Good News About Fibromyalgia

A young woman, 31 years old, had a series of terrible accidents. The first one occurred when she was just five years old, and the latest happened as an adult. The serious nature of these accidents had left her in chronic pain and taking a host of pharmaceuticals prescribed to help alleviate her symptoms. Over time, she found that this approach was not working for her. She decided to try something different.

She visited an upper cervical chiropractor and finally found the results she was looking for. After adjustments were made to the uppermost region of the spine, her body, and life began to heal.

Having these important vertebrae in proper alignment is crucial for maintaining health. When that alignment is compromised by accident or injury, gentle upper cervical chiropractic care can bring about outstanding and lasting results.

Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Always TiredChronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by extreme tiredness and fatigue. Both physical and mental activity may cause the tiredness to worse. However, what sets this tiredness apart is that rest will not provide relief.

There are a number of theories that have been posited about the cause of chronic fatigue. Some of these theories include the idea that a viral infection may be at the source of the disease, or that psychological stress may be the underlying factor.

Some confuse chronic fatigue syndrome with fibromyalgia. Many of the symptoms are similar. Since there is no definitive test for either condition, one person may be diagnosed with chronic fatigue by one doctor but would be diagnosed with fibromyalgia by another.

What Is Chronic Fatigue?

To get a diagnosis, you will need to exhibit no fewer than four of the following symptoms over the course of half a year. Children and teens may receive a diagnosis after just 3 months.

Common Chronic Fatigue Symptoms

Chronic fatigue is now associated with cortisol level changes. This hormone is vital to overall health and body functions. Low cortisol levels can be caused by a misalignment of the upper cervical spine (C1 and C2 vertebrae). Head and neck injuries can easily cause such a misalignment even if the accident wasn’t serious.

Because of this, it is important to see an upper cervical chiropractor to determine if your chronic fatigue may be the result of a misalignment. Dr. Geoff Besso of Stow, Ohio has been specially trained to diagnose and correct such misalignments of the upper neck.

vertigo, dizziness, spinningAlmost everyone has experienced about of dizziness at some point in his or her life.  Usually, these episodes are short-lived and never thought about again.  However, people who live with chronic vertigo may experience frequent episodes that last anywhere from a few seconds to days on end.

To understand vertigo, it’s important to understand the way the body is able to maintain balance under normal conditions.  Three systems are responsible for relaying sensory information from the body to the brain about the body’s position:

  1. your vision
  2. your vestibular system (which includes the inner ear)
  3. and your proprioception (sensors in the feet, trunk and spine that respond to touch)

To learn more about the connection between head and neck injuries and vertigo download our complimentary e-book How to Naturally Relieve Vertigo without Drugs by clicking the image below.

BessoVertigoBook

Signals from these three systems are processed in the brainstem, an area of the spine that connects the brain itself to the spinal cord.  The brainstem is protected by the uppermost two vertebrae in the neck – the atlas (C1) and axis (C2).  When there is an interruption in the transmission of these signals, the brain becomes confused about the body’s position in space and the sensation of vertigo happens.

If you suffer from chronic episodes of vertigo or dizziness, it is important to have the alignment of the C1 and C2 vertebra checked by an upper cervical chiropractor.   Dr. Besso is an upper cervical specialist in Stow, Ohio who helps his patients with vertigo get back to living a normal life.  By working to restore normal spinal alignment of the upper cervical area, the pressure on the brainstem is removed so that signals between the body and brain can be received properly.

Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Always TiredFibromyalgia is a condition that affects approximately 3-20 million people in the Americas.1 It is a condition that affects women 10 times more than men, with symptoms varying from fatigue, pain all over the body, sleep problems, and cloudy thinking. The biggest problems for people are the inability to sleep and chronic inflammation. There are very few relief options available for Fibromyalgia that are effective.

Natural relief for Fibromyalgia is what many patients are seeking for relief, but there are very few options available. One of the newest trends is in natural supplements to reduce the systemic inflammation.2 Many supplements are unregulated and have marginal efficacy. One of the best ways is to keep a food journal to monitor for flair ups. The most common culprits are grains such as bread, pasta, etc. This is a great method for reducing the triggers that exacerbate Fibromyalgia, but it does not treat the underlying cause.

Fibromyalgia specialist Dr. Geoff Besso is helping patients get natural relief. Dr. Besso is an Upper Cervical Chiropractor, who focuses on the Atlas (C1) vertebra. It has been proven that when the Atlas, which is the first bone at the top of the neck, is misaligned from the normal position, it has negative effects on the body. If the Atlas is misaligned, it affects the neurological connection to expressing the genes and properly producing chemicals that control pain and immune system function.3

When the Atlas is in the correct position, the brain and body can begin communicating and functioning as normal. When the body has returned to its normal function, healing from Fibromyalgia symptoms starts to occur.

Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Always TiredThe neck and spine are made up of small bones called vertebrae. The top two are referred to as the upper cervical spine. They protect the brainstem. They also allow you to move your head. Because of their location, these bones play a vital role in how well the brain and the rest of the body communicate with one another. They also keep your head upright by supporting its weight (approximately 10 pounds).

In order for your central nervous system (CNS) to function properly, these bones need to be in alignment. Consider just a few things that the CNS is responsible for:

Of course, the CNS does far more than this short list can include, but you get the idea of how vital these processes are to life and health. When these processes are thrown off by an injury, many health problems can result including pain throughout the body. For many, such a misalignment is the underlying cause of chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia.

Research Reveals the Benefits of Upper Cervical Care

Perhaps you have already read testimonies of people who suffered from fibromyalgia and experienced much relief through upper cervical chiropractic. There are also numerous studies that have been done. One such study involving 23 people showed that the patients experienced as much as 90% fewer symptoms after receiving relief.

If you live in the Stow, Ohio area, Dr. Geoff Besso can help you find relief. Dr. Besso is trained in upper cervical chiropractic. This is a specialized form of chiropractic that involves diagnosing and correcting misalignments of the C1 and C2 vertebrae, otherwise known as the upper cervical spine. These are the two vertebrae mentioned above that need to be in alignment for proper CNS function.
